Holistic Massage Therapy (HMT)

"Breathing in relaxation, breathing out tension"

WOMEN ONLY

What is HMT?

Working from a holistic, integrative perspective, the body is viewed as a reflection of the whole person and of all lived experiences. The body is the "home" of emotions (including the non-conscious dynamics), belief systems and spiritual expression (mind-body connection). HMT deals not only with the physical but it also considers how you are feeling emotionally and energetically.

The treatment
On our first consultation, you will be asked to complete a detailed health questionnaire. A truly holistic approach involves working ‘with’ you rather than doing ‘to’ so as well as agreeing a massage plan in advance, your feedback is encouraged both during and after the session.
HMT encompasses several different techniques from Swedish massage, deep tissue, lymphatic drainage, acupressure and head massage.
A half hour session typically focuses on the back, neck and shoulders. A session of 1 hour or more will be a full body massage.

What is HMT beneficial for?
Massage benefits are both mind and body. Massage helps:

On the physical level:

• Pain relief

Relieves muscular tension (including the face and scalp)

• Releases tight nodules “knots”

• Relieves muscular fatigue & spasms

• Eases joint stiffness and inflammation

• Improves muscle function and joint mobility

• Increases cellular activity to assist tissue recovery

• Enables deep relaxation

• Improves sleep pattern

• Regulates hormone levels

• Encourages detoxification of lactic acid and waste from the body

• Improves the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the skin, muscles, bones and joints

• Boosts energy levels

• Improves digestion

• Strengthens the immune system

• Improves skin tone and texture.

On the mental and emotional level:

• Alleviates mental fatigue

• Increases mental clarity

• Improves concentration

• Increases feelings of wellbeing, helps with depression.

• Eases stress (excellent for anxiety disorders)

Balances emotions

• Increases confidence

• Improves connection to the ‘self’, leaving "you feeling in your body".

Are there any reasons why I should not receive massage?

There are a number of factors which preclude massage, for example if the you are ill and/or have a fever. You are also advised not to drink alcohol or take drugs (unless by prescription!) in the 24 hours before and after the massage. This could affect the liver and kidneys as in addition to the toxins released by the massage they will also be trying to cope with toxins from the drug.  People with some conditions (such as cancer) may be treated only with consent from their GP. The massage therapist will advise you, as the list is quite extensive.

How many sessions should I have?

Just one treatment can often make a real difference to how you are feeling. It’s often more effective to have a course of regular treatments. This may be weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on your needs. A treatment plan will be discussed with you, and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences, and can be changed at any time according to progress.
